We are ecstatic to introduce this First Growth Pinot Noir from the Westhofener Morstein vineyard in Germany’s Rheinhessen region. The Morstein is considered to be one of Germany’s top 100 vineyards and was first mentioned in documents dating back to 1282 AD. It is a southern facing slope with extraordinarily barren marl topsoil that covers calcareous rocks with enormous water reservoirs.
The Morstein Pinot Noir was made by reducing the yield to a single grape per shoot. It was put down in small barrique barrels for 18 months. With a dark red color and an aroma of blackberries, black currants, pine and spicy toasted oak, this wine unfolds slowly on the nose to reveal finer and more complex aromas of cinnamon and black pepper. The 2004 Morstein is a perfectly balanced wine that tastes of black cherry, boysenberry and the intense minerality of the ground from which it came. With an endless finish, this wine is a sheer pleasure to enjoy.
Decant this wine and it is easy to enjoy young, but can be put down for another 3-8 years to allow it to increase in ripeness and complexity. Grilled red meats, game, wild fowl such as goose, duck or turkey, and cheese are the ideal compliments.
