Dr. Hinkel Estate

The Estate & Background

Vintner Dr. Hinkel

Wine is a way of life for the Hinkel family, who has been in the business of cultivating grapes for 300 years. The knowledge about wine has been passed on from generation to generation within the family, but it is important to the current winemaker, Dr. Roland Hinkel, to merge old traditions with new methods. The Dr. Hinkel estate grows grapes on an area of 27 hectares in the community of Framersheim in Rheinhessen, producing approximately 300,000 bottles a year.

The Winemaker's Philosophy

Hinkel Estate

For Dr. Roland Hinkel, “life is too short to drink bad wine” and he vouches for the quality of his wines. Beginning with the ecological cultivation of the grapes through yield reductions in spring, the thinning of the vines in late summer and the fermenting process in the cellar, quality control is fully in the hands of Roland Hinkel.

The Wine

Dr. Hinkel & Son in the Vineyards

Approximately two third of the output consists of a wide variety of white wines, among them Riesling, Pinot Grigio, Silvaner, Siegerrebe and Huxelrebe, while the remaining third of the harvest produces reds, most notably Pinot Noir and Dornfelder.

The Dr. Hinkel estate was recently rewarded with a number of federal and state prizes, including gold, silver and bronze medals, and has been featured in the German wine magazines Weinwelt and Selection.
