Q - How did you get started in the wine business?
A - I responded to an advertisement as a 'wine broker.' I thought it sounded like a lot of fun...drink wine, learn about wine, talk to people…I’m good at these things :-)
Q - What was the idea behind Wine Smarties?
A - I helped to start and run a wine bar in Hillcrest that soon became very busy. I had missed the beginning of my time there, when it was quiet and I could sit down and talk with people about the world of wines. Through this experience I realized that there is a lot of misinformation and lack of proper wine education out there, so I thought it would be a great idea to offer that to San Diegans...help them get wine smarter. With my past career life as a teacher, it was a natural fit for me to combine my two passions; teaching and wine.
Q - How does the Wine Smarties approach liven up wine education?
A - I have a lot of spunk and I pride myself on introducing new things to my clients. So, I'll do a class on the wines of New York, or I'll do a wine event on unlikely food and wine pairing combinations....get people out of their palate 'safety zones.' So, my energy and dynamic teaching style combined with unexplored material makes my events not only fun, but very interesting. Above all, I want people to walk away from my event or class having learned something new while having a great time!
Q - What has it been like getting to know TFW?
A - Damon and Sabrina have in fact become not just business allies, but friends as well. They are both committed, focused professionals in a world where people don't return phone calls or emails. Diligence and hard work are the foundation of success, and they have that nailed. I enjoy not just their fantastic products, (that to anyone who is serious about wine, would become fanatical about), but also their action and goal-oriented work ethic. Coming from New England, I jive best with people who not just talk the talk, but indeed walk the walk. Cheers!
Q- What is your impression of TFW's approach to their business?
A - They offer a fresh new way of selling wine. They have smart, forward-thinking ways of utilizing the 'now' technological world of the internet. As a wine buyer for several restaurants, this eases my job, and as an events planner, knowing that Damon and Sabrina are behind any order or event, the job will get done, and get done well!
